    Head of Energy Research

    Mr. Dolapo Oni is the Head of Energy Research at the Ecobank Group, based out of Lagos Nigeria. Prior to joining Ecobank, he worked as a ratings and research analyst for Agusto & Co. Ltd, Nigeria’s leading credit ratings and business information provider. At Agusto, he was responsible for the rating coverage of the non-financial corporate organizations, Municipals and their financial instruments. As a research analyst he was responsible for research coverage of the Pharmaceutical, Automobile, Oil & Gas (Upstream, Downstream, Oilfield Services) and Real Estate sectors of the Nigerian economy.
    Currently at Ecobank, he was responsible for research and market intelligence on the Energy sectors of countries in Sub Sahara Africa, especially countries where Ecobank is present. His role covers the provision of business information and research intelligence on the oil and gas value chain, Power, Renewable Energy and fertilizers in Ecobank footprint countries especially. He provides market intelligence and identifies credible funding opportunities for the investment banking teams across the group.   • Batchi Baldeh

    Director & Head – Power, Investments Division

    Batchi joined AFC in 2008 and is currently Director & Head – Power, Investments Division. He has been the power lead on several innovative projects across Africa; including assets under the complex Nigeria Power Privatisation program, the Central Bank of Nigeria's $2 Billion Power & Aviation Intervention Fund, and the ongoing development of an 80 MW IPP in Rwanda and two 450 MW IPPs with the West African Power Pool (WAPP). He is Chairman of the Boards of Cabeolica S.A (a 26 MW wind IPP in Cape Verde) and Cenpower Operations & Services Limited (a Joint Venture with Sumitomo Corporation of Japan, which will provide O&M Services to a 350 MW IPP under construction in Ghana). Batchi has over 29 years experience and has been a consultant to the World Bank, European Union (BizClim) and Government of Lesotho. He was the Managing Director of Gambia's National Water and Electricity Company; and has been a speaker at several international fora.

    Batchi has a BSc honours degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (Newcastle University, UK - British Council Scholarship) and an MBA (Boston University, USA - USAID Scholarship). He is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors (South Africa) and a member of the Institute of Engineering & Technology (UK).

  • Patrick Okey Mgbenwelu

    Director & Head, Debt Solutions

    Patrick joined FBN Capital in December 2011 having spent 3 years heading the project financing department of Standard Bank's Lagos operations – i.e. Stanbic IBTC Bank. He joined FBN Capital with over 20 years banking experience of which 18 years has been dedicated primarily towards financial advisory, structuring, debt arranging / lending and closing of big-ticket project finance transactions in the UK, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, U.A.E. and other GCC countries. He has worked on project financings in excess of approximately US$83 billion since 1996. As head of FBN Capital's Debt Solutions Department, he is responsible for leading the deal team involved in advising, structuring, executing and closing of the firm's debt arranging and debt advisory activities.

    Patrick's infrastructure / project financing career commenced as a financial modeller at London Underground Limited's ("LUL") Project Finance Advisory Group as an executive member of the deal-team developing complex financial models, business cases, payment mechanisms and financing options where he advised and negotiated on various transport based projects being implemented by London Transport utilizing the UK Government's Private Finance Initiative ("PFI") at that time. His career further developed at the London branch of the German bank, Bayerische Landesbank's ("BLB") structured finance group where he undertook various project finance (PFI / BOT / PPP) duties, and subsequently as Assistant Manager, Project & Trade Finance Department, GCC Group, at Arab Petroleum Investments Corporation ("APICORP") in Saudi Arabia where he was actively involved in a varied number of power, petrochemical, oil & gas and shipping transactions both in the execution, advisory, lending and syndication of facilities. He was subsequently appointed Senior Corporate Banker and acting Head of project finance at National Commercial Bank ("NCB"), Saudi Arabia's largest bank with prime responsibility for managing the bank's project finance lending and advisory activities. At NCB Patrick led the deal team advising the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the US$8 billion plus Saudi Railway expansion Project.

    Since returning to Nigeria he has been involved as adviser to Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation on their green-field refinery projects, Lagos State Government on the Blue Line Railway Project and the Lekki Airport project. Prior to returning to Nigeria in 2008 he was Managing Director and Head of Project and Corporate Finance at Bahrain based Gulf One Investment Bank where he led the deal team responsible for structuring and arranging the funding of aircrafts, infrastructure, and in particular, the King Abdulaziz International Airport (Hajj Terminal) – the first ever project financing for an airport in the GCC on a 100% Islamic finance basis.

    Patrick Mgbenwelu is a regular industry speaker / panel member and writes case studies / articles in various PPP / project finance publications, he is a founding council member of the International Project Finance Association ("IPFA") (Nigeria branch). Patrick is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers ("ACIB") London, holds an M.Sc. Finance & Investment (UK), an MBA (UK) and also an Associate of the Institute of Financial Services, UK. He sits on the advisory board of the Lagos Business School's CIPRA (Centre for Infrastructure Policy Regulation & Advancement).

  • Wale Shonibare

    Managing Director, Shonibare Consulting

    Wale is the Managing Director/CEO of Shonibare Consulting, a dedicated Infrastructure Finance and PPP Advisory practice based in Dubai. He has over 27 years experience spanning Asia, Europe, Middle East and Africa. Prior to establishing Shonibare Consulting, he was the Deputy Group CEO/Managing Director, Investment Banking at United Capital in Lagos. Previous positions include: Managing Director and Head of Infrastructure, Africa, Middle East and New Markets at Renaissance Capital in Dubai, Director KPMG UAE in Dubai and Associate Director KPMG UK in London.

    He was responsible for United Capital Plc's Investment Banking business, which covered Debt and Equity Capital Markets, M&A, and Project Finance. Recent experience includes: advising and fund raising for new owners of power generation assets under Nigeria’s recent power privatization schemes, Nigeria’s first diaspora bond, several state government and corporate bonds, project and structured finance and M&A transactions across various sectors: Power generation and distribution facilities, upstream oil and gas, CNG and LNG facilities, fertilizer plants, hydropower power projects, coal mines, toll roads, light and heavy rail, ports, real estate and hospitality and specialized economic zones.

    Wale has served on several industry panels, including the Securities and Exchange Commission Committee on the development of the 10-year Capital Markets Masterplan and the Ministerial Committee for the development of Privately Financed Hospitals in Nigeria.

    He holds an MBA from Imperial College, University of London and a B.Eng (Hons) degree from University of Glasgow.

  • Yusuf Hamisu Abubakar

    Board Chairman, Kaduna Electricity Distribution Co

    An officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), Yusuf Hamisu Abubakar is a versatile lawyer, academician and technocrat. He has amassed knowledge in different fields of specialization including law, financial management and economics. He graduated from the Bayero University Kano with an LLB and thereafter proceeded to the Nigeria Law School and acquired a BL.

    He obtained his MBA at the University of Exeter UK, where he specialized in Financial Management. To sharpen his skills and broaden his intellectual base, Mr. Abubakar attended various courses both locally and abroad. Among those courses are financial Management and Accounting for Senior Managers (SMU Dallas) USA, Negotiation skills for Executives, Templeton College Oxford University UK, Corporate Governance Harvard Business School Boston USA, Chief Executive Program (CEP13) at the Lagos Business School Nigeria, Institute of Directors Course, London, UK.

    Mr. Abubakar held several appointments in both the academia and public service. He lectured at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He also served as a one-time Director General, Bureau for Lands and Survey, Kaduna State, where he brought his initiative and broad vision to bear in the land administration in Kaduna state. He introduced the public private partnership in the provision of information system in the newly developed layouts.

    He served as a member of the Kaduna State Executive Council as Honourable Commissioner of Health and Social Development, and Finance and Economic Planning respectively.

    He then went into active legal practice until he was appointed as the Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) where he designed a robust organizational structure and developed the fund's operational culture of excellence and fashioned it into a knowledge-driven proactive organization. His legacies at the PTDF included the institutionalization of excellence in petroleum training to meet world class status and international best practices.

    Mr. Abubakar also served as a Commissioner in the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC). He is on the board of many private investments including the Sahelian Energy and Integrated Services Ltd, Kano Electricity Distribution Plc (KEDCO), as well as serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors in Niger Insurance Plc and Kaduna Electricity Distribution Plc (Kaduna Electric).

    He is a member of various professional organizations such as the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), International Law Societies, London and International Bar Association for Energy Economists, Society of Petroleum Engineers (Nigeria) and the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN), the Institute of Directors (IoD) etc.

    He is also the recipient of various awards and honours. These include the Officer of the Order of the Niger conferred on him by the Government of Nigeria, Fellow, Eisenhower Foundation (EF), Philadelphia USA and Honorary Doctor of Business, Robert Gordon University, UK. He is a Fellow, Institute of Petroleum Studies, and Honorary Fellow, Nigeria Institute of Physics. Academically, he won the Mudiaga Odje Prize for Best Law Student Bayero University Kano, Vahe Baramian prize for best student in criminal procedure and Sir Lionell Brett Prize for best performance in Criminal Law.

  • Dr. Anthony Ikenna Babatunde Akah

    Acting CEO/Head of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC)

    Dr. Anthony Ikenna Babatunde Akah, mni, is the acting CEO/Head of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). Prior to his appointment, he was the General Manager (Director), Consumer Affairs at the Commission. He is an alumnus of Nigeria's apex institution, the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru (mni-SEC.37, 2015).

    A Chartered Accountant/Certified National Accountant of Nigeria, Certified International Regulation Specialist and Public-Private Partnership Specialist from the joint programme of the Loughborough University, UK Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC), and the Institute For Public-Private Partnership (IP3), Virginia, USA. He is also an alumnus of Harvard University (JFK School of Government), USA's Strategic Management of Regulatory and Enforcement Agencies Course, 2008.

    Dr. Akah is a graduate of Accountancy with a second major in Banking and Finance in 1989/1990 and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) with specialization in Financial Management in 1992, from De La Salle University, Philippines. Dr. Akah also holds a Doctorate Degree in Management (Ph.D.), graduating with Distinction in 1996 from Adamson University, Philippines.

    Dr. Akah is a member of many professional bodies, including, founding member- Academy of Regulatory Professionals, Public Utility Research Center, USA; Vice President, Nigerian Association For Energy Economics; International Association For Energy Economics; Nigerian Institute of Management; World Energy Council, Association of National Accountants of Nigeria and also a Member of Energy Regulators Regional Association (ERRA) working Group on Customers and Retail Markets.
  • Engr. Oladele Amoda

    Managing Director & CEO Eko Electricity Distribition Co

    Engr. Oladele Amoda was born in Isara Remo, Ogun State on October 12, 1956. He attended Ijebu Muslim College, Ijebu Ode in Nigeria.

    He earned a BSc degree in Electrical Engineering in 1982 from the University of Memphis, TN, USA, an MBA degree in Management at the Enugu University of Science and Technology. He also earned MSc degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Lagos. He went further to earn a MSc in Organization Leadership from Regis University, Denver Colorado, USA. He bagged a Doctorate (HC) in Management from the Commonwealth University, Belize in 2012. He is presently a Phd. Research Student in Business Leadership at the Regent Univeristy, Virginia Beach, USA.

    He is a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE), Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (FNIEEE), Fellow of the Institute of Credit Administration (FICA), Fellow of the Strategic Finance and Administrative Institute (FSFA), Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical, Electronic Engineers Inc. of USA (MIEEE), Member of the New York Academy of Sciences . He is a registered Chartered Engineer (CEng) with the Engineering Council of the United Kingdom and also with the Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

    He joined the then National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) in 1983 and has been serving in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) in various capacities from then until his appointment as MD/CEO in the Public Sector in 2011. Having been in the Distribution Sector for 3 decades, he was appointed by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a Board Member of the Presidential Task Force on Power. He was also a member of the Nigerian Electricity Market Transition Steering Group. He was one of the pioneer CEOs inducted to the CEO Forum of the African Utility Week in 2013 in South Africa.

    He has acquired several merit awards and laurels from the Engineering and other professional bodies such as Distinguished Gold Service Award, Ministerial Awards, 2014 African Power Industry Personality of the year award by African Leadership Magazine in UK and several Merit Awards.

    After privatization of the utility companies in Nigeria, Engr. Amoda was engaged by the new owners of Eko Disco, West Power and Gas Limited as a pioneer Managing Director/CEO for the new company where he is leading a progressive transition and transformation of the company's activities towards service improvement and revenue growth. He led EKO DISCO to be the best in all aspect of distribution activities in Nigeria. He pioneered several power industry best practices and innovations.

    Engr. Amoda has attended various national and international courses at Harvard Business School, seminars and conferences in Europe, Asia, America etc.

    He is a socialite and a consummate philanthropist of international repute. For his meritorious services to several communities in Nigeria, he was bestowed with several chieftaincy titles and lots of laurels/merit awards.

  • Brian Baltimore

    Lead Transaction Advisor, Power Africa Transactions and Reform Program

    Brian Baltimore is Lead Transaction Advisor for the Power Africa Transactions and Reform Program in Nigeria. Power Africa is a $7 billion initiative launched by the administration of President Barack Obama to expand power availability and access in Africa. He leads a team of commercial, project finance, legal, policy and technical experts who advise independent power producers as well as NBET, TCN, the Ministry of Power, Works & Housing and the Vice President's Office Advisory Power Team. Prior to joining Power Africa, Brian worked with multiple global independent power producers developing and financing utility-scale thermal and renewable power projects in South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique and Rwanda. He also has more than a decade of experience financing large-scale infrastructure projects in Africa and Central-Asia. Brian has worked with both public and private sector financial institutions including: Bank of America, the Millennium Challenge Corporation, USAID and the Asian Development Bank.

  • Robert Dickerman

    Managing Director/CEO, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company

    Bob Dickerman is a senior energy executive with more than 30 years of experience in strategy, development, electric utilities, generation, fuel markets, performance management and corporate governance.

    Bob was the President and CEO of Zenergy Capital, Inc., an energy advisory business focused on corporate strategy and capital transactions in electric utilities and power generation. Zenergy Capital provides strategic, financial and operating advisory services to private equity, NGOs, power developers, utilities and other strategic interests.

    He was the Chief Operating Officer of Marubeni Power, a division of Marubeni Corporation of Japan, a $75B conglomerate. His responsibilities at Marubeni included strategy, development and all commercial activities. Under his leadership Marubeni won a bid to develop a 360 MW power project in Jamaica, the largest capital project in that country's history. He also successfully led the negotiations for a new power purchase agreement in Trinidad for 800 MW of generating capacity restructured the operations of PowerGen, the largest generation company in the country. He equally served on the boards of Jamaica Public Service Company and PowerGen.

    Prior to Marubeni, he was the founder and CEO of Sempra Energy Solutions, a $2B provider of electricity and natural gas commodities, energy efficiency services, O&M services for the industrial sector, and owner/operator of steam and cooling plants in major metropolitan areas. Under his leadership, Sempra Energy Solutions grew from 120 employees to over 600 and converted a $20M annual loss into over $20M in annual net income. Sempra is the parent company of both San Diego Gas & Electric and Southern California Gas Company.

    He was a well-known global energy trader for 20 years, trading crude oil, petroleum products, natural gas and electricity in every major global trading market, including the US, Western Europe, Mediterranean, Eastern Europe, Asia and Latin America. He was a Senior Vice President of Edison International and Head of its trading division, Edison Source, where he led all trading activity in gas and power across the US. Edison International is the parent company of Southern California Edison Company.

    Dickerman has been a well-respected global energy strategy consultant, having worked as the head of the energy strategy practices at KPMG and Navigant Consulting. In these positions he developed and implemented growth strategies in new markets with new products as well as major restructuring initiatives to mitigate risk and cost without sacrificing profit. He has worked for major energy companies in Europe, Latin America and Asia and led development activities globally in various energy sectors.

    He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Union College, and a Master's degree in Business Administration from the Graduate School of Management at the University of Chicago.
  • Olawale Oluwo

    Hon. Commissioner, Ministry of Energy & Mineral Resources, Lagos State

    Mr. Olawale Oluwo was born in July 1966 and started his educational career in 1972 at Okemeta Memorial Primary School, Somolu, Lagos where he passed out in 1977. He obtained his WASCE O Level in 1983 at the Lagos City College Yaba before proceeding to the Lagos State Polytechnic, Isolo for his Higher School Certificate Advance Level which he got in 1985.

    He gained admission to the prestigious University of Lagos in 1986 where he obtained his Bachelor of Science BSC Degree in Economics in 1989. He did his mandatory one year national service with Prime Merchant Bank Ltd (now defunct) corporate finance from June 1990 – Dec 1992. He later joined the FSB Int'l Bank Plc (now Fidelity Bank) Dec 1992 – July 1995 and rose to become the Deputy Head, Energy Group (Oil & Gas)

    He joined the First City Monument Bank Plc in Aug 1995 and worked in the Corporate Finance (Capital Markets) and April 1997 moved to Intercontinental Bank (now Access Bank) where he held various positions of responsibilities including General Manager, Intercontinental Capital Mkts, Head, Energy & Telecommunications Group. While there, he set up Intercontinental Capital Markets (subsidiary of Intercontinental Bank )-pioneer GM and also set up and managed the Energy & Telecommunications Group of Intercontinental Bank Plc

    He had a brief stay at Eurodollar Investments Limited, Lagos ED, Business Development & Strategy between Jan 2003 – June 2003 before moving on to Continental Trust Bank Ltd (now UBA) Head, Corporate Banking & Finance from July 2003 – May 2004.

    His banking sojourn took him to Prudent Bank Plc (Now Skye Bank Plc) as Deputy Head, Investment Banking Group between June 2004 – Sept 2004 before joining the BGL Group in Oct 2004 as Head, Corporate Finance. In April 2008 he was promoted to the position of DMD, then MD/CEO BGL Securities and in April 2011 rose to the enviable position of the MD/CEO BGL Investment Banking.

    He became an Executive Director – Operations in Trustfund Pension Plc supervising Contributions; Investments; Benefits; Finance & Accounts; Risk Mgt.
    During his sojourn round the banking sector, Mr. Olowu made major contributions to the banking sector, including membership of the Turnaround Team for the restructuring of Continental Trust Bank Ltd. (Now UBA); Membership of the Turnaround Team that restructured Fed Savings Bank to FSB Int'l Bank (Fidelity). He also handled the merger of Standard Trust Bank Plc & UBA Plc, Nigeria's first bank merger.
    Other bank merger and acquisition deals handled by Mr Olowu are Ecobank; Afribank (now Mainstreet Bank); Oceanic; Access; FCMB; Stanbic-IBTC; Skye Bank; Spring Bank(Now Enterprise Bank)

    He also handled the unbundling of Dangote Group (spin-off of Dangote Flour, Dangote Sugar & Dangote Salt from Dangote Industries Plc), the acquisition of West African Provincial Insurance Plc by Intercontinental Bank.Merger of PZ Industries Plc & Thermocool Ltd. (consolidation of PZ Manchester's interest), and the merger of Nestle Foods Plc & Nestle Nig. Ltd. (transfer of Nestle S.A. Switzerland's interest).

    He supervised the management buyout of Pfizer Inc.'s equity interest in Pfizer Nigeria Plc by Neimeth Plc and leveraged buyout of Pfizer Inc.'s equity interest in Livestock Feeds Plc by Adset Plc, as well as the balance sheet restructuring of Unilever's interest in UAC (hive off of AJ Seward from UAC)
    He handled the N100 million Lagos Island Local Govt. Bond (first local govt. bond in Nigeria) other Public Offer of Bonds handled by Mr Olowu are .     Mr. Olowu is a board member of several companies including Director (Exec) Trustfund Pensions (4th largest PFA in Nigeria – over N300b Assets); JKK Plc (premier ICT company in Nigeria) – 2011 to 2013;Lexcap Partners Limited (the single largest shareholder in BGL Plc); BGL Securities (one of Nigeria's largest stockbroking firms) 2007-2013; Kings Crown School Ltd (training institute for business professionals); Boston Advisory Ltd (top investment banking/M & A firm in Nigeria).

    He is also chairman of the following companies: Manhattan Resources Limited (emerging asset management firm), Eurodollar Investments Ltd (leading financial assets arbitraging firm); GM & F Limited (a leading dredging & maritime services company) and Curious Heritage Ltd (a consulting/training & self development firm.

    He is a member of various professional bodies including the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers. He also attended several executive courses and workshops both at local and international levels.

  • Tope Shonubi

    Executive Director, Sahara Group; Board Chairman, Ikeja Electricity Distribution Co

    Tope Shonubi is an Executive Director and founding member of the Sahara Group. An alumnus of the University of Lagos where he bagged degrees in Environmental studies and Architecture, he also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Law of Contracts and Contract Management from the University of Westminster as well as an MBA in Marketing and Strategic Management from the Middlesex University Business School. He is a member of the Institute of Petroleum (UK), Association of MBA's (UK) and the Royal Institute of British Architects.

    An astute business man who has over the years garnered a wealth of experience in Operations, business strategy and business development, Tope Shonubi has worked in various capacities in transforming the Sahara Group from a Nigerian Oil company to a Global Energy company. Having been in the vanguard of Sahara's foray into the power sector, in November 2013, he rose to the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors - Ikeja Electricity Distribution Plc and also serves as a non-executive director on the board of Egbin Power Plc.

    Tope Shonubi had a brief stint with the Presidency as a Presidential Assistant for International Investment from 1999 to 2001 and Presidential Assistant Youth and Business development 2001 to 2003. He has also keenly served on various Presidential and National committees for the promotion of economic and entrepreneurial growth and development in Africa, from 1998 till date.

  • Abiodun Aina

    Sr Investment Officer – Infrastructure Africa, International Finance Corp (IFC)

    Abiodun Aina is currently a Senior Investment Officer with IFC’s Infrastructure Africa team based in Lagos, Nigeria. Abiodun has spent the last year in Nigeria leading IFC’s team implementing the Joint World Bank Group’s Energy Business Plan for Nigeria, an initiative that organizes the World Bank Group’s resources to support the Federal Government of Nigeria’s ongoing power sector reforms, and, utilizes various WBG products to support the development and implementation of projects along the power sector’s value chain, including mobilizing investments from IFC and other investors.

    Before IFC, Abiodun spent 6 years in the Energy Financial Services arm at GE Capital, where he worked on equity and debt investments in various energy-industry projects, with particular focus on thermal, renewable energy, and midstream oil and gas projects in North America. Abiodun began his career at Andersen / KPMG, as part of the Assurance & Business Advisory team focused on Energy clients based in Lagos, Nigeria. He holds an MBA from the Yale School of Management, an MPA in Economic Policy Management from Columbia University’s School of Public and International Affairs, and a Bachelors in Economics from Obafemi  Awolowo University in Nigeria. He is also a CFA Charterholder.

    Michael Korwin is a Senior Vice President – Business Development Group, primarily responsible for new business marketing activity. After graduating from the University of Cambridge he started a career in finance. Initially specializing in auditing and analysis he turned to marketing and relationship management. Michael has more than 20 years experience in finance working for major financial institutions. In his BD capacity Michael has to a large extent concentrated on enhancing Moody`s footprint in developing economies – initially in the CIS markets and recently with growing focus on Sub Saharan Africa, where it is anticipated that the bulk of future efforts will be concentrated.
