What role should government play in the nascent solar industry in West Africa? The government has given much of the electricity value chain to the private sector, with mixed results. Should it begin regulating portions of the solar industry, to protect consumers or to encourage business in the industry? How can policy be helpful to the industry, and should that come from the government or the industry?

SUPPORTING SOLAR

Pay as you go and mobile payment systems are changing the power business model, by ensuring businesses are paid for services received.  This is especially true for solar businesses. What should a payment system cost, how much does it save a business using it, and how reliable are they? Payment service provides and clients will discuss how to choose a system that fits your requirements, and what to expect. Also, the panel will discuss if there are wider power market repercussions to using these payment systems.

HYBRID SOLAR

If the grid is not enough, what power source should be added to your home or place of work or worship? The answer used to be obvious: A diesel or gas generator. Now generator firms see the benefit in introducing solar systems that work in combination with generators. Is this the best of all worlds?

WORKSHOP: Solar Installation and Design Dos and Don'ts

Attendees will learn the basics of what is required to design and install a standalone solar system, particularly solar PV roof-top systems. Real life examples will be used, such as the installation of a PV system for a single family, stand-alone home, with minimum available grid support. The topic will include the review of project documents including site plans, electrical drawings, and manufacturer installation instructions.

Also, methods to construct a PV array support structures and install DC and AC wiring and equipment will be discussed. Proper electrical labelling of cables, system testing, commissioning procedures and performance verification will also be covered. Safety measures for both the installer and the PV system user will be detailed. In this course, it is assumed that attendees have an electrical engineering background.
