15:20PM -WORKSHOP: CONCEPT, COMPONENTS & DESIGN OF HYBRID ENERGY SYSTEMS

Solar PV systems combined with diesel generators to create a hybrid system must be carefully designed for financial and energy efficiency. Learn how to match energy requirements with the correct components, taking the load profile and other factors into account. A modular approach will be taken to the assembly of system examples, and a simulation software called Sunny Design will be used to provide greater transparency into the design process. Topics to be covered in this session will include, among others:

·         AC coupled battery storage systems

·         PV Hybrid systems without battery storage

·         Load and generator management

·         Design criteria´s for systems with and without battery storage

Conducted by: Guluma Megersa, Technical Sales / Business Development Manager – Off-grid Sales, SMA

11:30 - WORKSHOP: ENERGY TRADING WITH SOLARCOIN AND USING PEER-2-PEER (P2P) PLATFORMS

Blockchain technologies promise to greatly reduce transaction costs and provide additional financial security and transparency when purchasing and selling energy. A promising cryptocurrency made especially for solar is called, SolarCoin, and is now traded in 58 countries.

Learn how to become a “node” in the SolarCoin network, how solar firms can benefit, what open source tools are required, and what hurdles the Nigerian energy sector will need to leap to bring the most benefits of blockchain technology to fruition.

Speaker: Dr. Ayodele A. Faiyetole, Founder & Chief Executive, EarthSpace Resources

12:30PM - BREAK

12:45AM - WORKSHOP: DESIGNING MINI-GRID SYSTEMS

The development of mini-grids and then the scaling up of existing mini-grid systems, requires data-driven energy demand prediction and an understanding of the necessary modules and software required. There is also the opportunity for incremental hybridization and a total lifecycle energy analysis on a microgrid system for improved sustainability.

This workshop will cover what makes up a mini-grid system, how to predict the size mini-grid required, how to grow a mini-grid to meet increased demand, and how to design an entire system. Challenges to consider will also be discussed including how to anticipate intermediate low battery voltage, where to find necessary data in the planning stages, mini-grid modelling, and smart metering insights into mini-grids.

Speaker: Dr.  Engr. Tajudeen Humble Sikiru, Electrical Engineering Lecturer, Ahmadu Bello University

14:15PM - END OF TECHNICAL SESSIONS
